Warm greetings from AOS
Dear AOS Members and friends,
As we enter the final month of 2025, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to every member, volunteer, and supporter who helped make this an extraordinary year for the Amateur Observers Society of New York. From our outreach programs, to our meetings, to the quiet moments under dark skies we’ve shared together, AOS continues to shine because of you.
This past year showcased what happens when a dedicated community comes together with passion and purpose. Our collaboration with Hofstra University’s Stars on Sunday programs welcomed new members and returning friends each month. Our Music & Astronomy Under the Stars (MAUS) series expanded farther across Long Island than ever before, engaging thousands of families in astronomy. And our ongoing collaboration with the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center strengthened our presence in the region as a trusted educational partner.
Looking forward, our most ambitious initiative—the Sue Rose Observatory rebuild—continues to progress with steady momentum. With a target completion year of 2026, we are preparing for the next stages of planning, fundraising, and partnership development. As we step into the new year, we will be forming project committees, refining our milestone schedule, and advancing the next phase of this important project for the future of AOSNY.

We are honored to welcome Dr. Christian Sasse as our December Special Guest Lecturer.

We are truly fortunate to have him join us for this month’s lecture—an inspiring and forward-looking presentation you won’t want to miss.
And as always, please join us at 7:00 PM for this seasons last Stars on Sunday, restarting again in February 2026, our favorite monthly community observing event. Volunteers are always appreciated.

We have been invited back to the beautiful Garden City Bird Sanctuary for a special December outreach evening. Volunteers are needed, especially members who can bring telescopes. This location has always been a wonderful partner, and community turnout is consistently enthusiastic and appreciative.

🎄 AOS Holiday Party – Saturday, December 13th
📅 Saturday, December 13
⏰ 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM
📍 SPECIAL NEW LOCATION (see the Celestial Observer for full details)
This year’s gathering will be held in a larger, more comfortable venue, making it our most enjoyable holiday celebration yet.
We kindly ask members to consider donating an item to our Holiday Gift Table. Raffles help offset event costs and add a fun, festive spirit to the afternoon.
As we reflect on 2025, I am deeply proud of what we have accomplished together. The energy, enthusiasm, and dedication of our members make AOS a truly exceptional organization. Whether you shared your telescope, volunteered at events, attended meetings, or supported us in quieter ways—your contributions matter and strengthen our mission every single day.
Let’s close the year with gratitude, community, and clear skies. Wishing each of you a safe, joyful, and peaceful holiday season.
Warm Regards,
Jason Cousins
President – Amateur Observers’ Society of New York
